Architecture students from Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College recently visited the £80 million Baron’s Quay development site.  Led by their tutor Glyn Dulson the upper sixth students were given the opportunity to see behind the scenes at the large scale construction project in Northwich town centre.

Matt Brook, director of Broadway Malyan, the lead architect for the scheme gave an introduction to the concept behind the design of the buildings including how the black and white architecture of Northwich and its Victorian structures such as Town Bridge and the Anderton Boat Lift have inspired the design and have been re-interpreted into the present contemporary scheme.
Catherine Fox, Northwich Programme Manager from Cheshire West and Chester Council, explained to the students about the Council’s role as client, and Ashley Rogan, from Balfour Beatty, gave an insight into the contractor’s work on site.

Councillor Brian Clarke, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Infrastructure said: “Thanks to the team for showing the students around. Being able to have access to a major development provides a wealth of experience to see how a site is managed and see the construction process first hand.”
Tutor Glyn Dulson added: “The students had a fantastic day visiting Baron’s Quay and it was a real insight into how architects work and the processes that they go through to take buildings through to completion. A thoroughly great experience.”

The Cheshire West and Chester Council’s investment in the £80 million Baron’s Quay scheme is transforming Northwich town centre.
The Council is committed to making the borough a great place with vibrant and healthy communities full of inclusive leisure, heritage and culture.
The first phase of the development is anticipated to open at the end of the year including new restaurants, shops, public open space to the river weaver frontage, a five-screen Odeon cinema and parking for 900 vehicles.
