summer schoolAs part of the Maths Hub programme for North West London schools, the Maths department at St. Dominic’s, led by Alka Kalayil, played host to its very first Summer school.  Students from around the capital who had just finished their GCSE exams attended a three day course to bridge the gap between GCSE and A level maths.

The group of 19 students undertook a series of team building and sporting exercises to prepare their minds for the maths ahead. With their exams only just behind them, the maths department had collaborated on designing some interactive and explorative lessons to help the students to better understand what it’s like to study A level maths. The class were able to demonstrate what they knew of certain topics and how they could develop these to best prepare them for a future of mathematical study.

All members of the group were fantastic and really involved themselves in all activities. The class really valued what they had learnt during the few days they were with us and their enjoyment was reflected in the comments they made:

"It provided me with a good idea of the level of Maths that is taught at A level".

"I wish it was longer".

"I was able to learn different techniques of answering questions and solving equations".

"I enjoyed having the useful resources and interactive learning with white boards".

With the success of this year’s event, we look forward to preparing for the next summer school!
